A tall, herbaceous perennial with very large, thick, lance-shaped leaves, up to 1 foot wide and 2 feet long;

 and clusters of small, purplish, drooping flowers on stems taller than the leaves.

Useful in wet marshes and large retention ponds.

Host for Brazilian Skipper.
